RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
